The Murals & Street Art of Brixham

Brixham walls used to be very monochrome in days gone by, fading whitewash and rarely painted.  Nowadays they show a rainbow of colours, with memorials dotted around the harbour.

In 2009 there was a festival of Graffiti Art in Paignton, based at the old Lighthouse building and organised by the Devon Music Collective.

Rumours were that the elusive artist, Banksy, was in town and an image appeared in Torquay acclaimed as one of his.  Did Banksy ever leave his  mark in Brixham?  Who knows?  At the same time there was a sudden appearance of many 'Banksy type' stencilled images all over Brixham, much to the annoyance of the local authorities.

In 2018 a mural was commissioned on the end wall of what was then the Smugglers and Pirates Experience in King Street.  Seeing the appreciation of this image started a project of rejuvenation of the scruffier parts of the town centre by Brixham Future, a “not for profit” community group. Described as “small scale, quick win, low cost” projects to benefit the local community, the aim was ‘micro-regeneration’. Since then walls across the town have sprouted wings, warships and Winston Churchill, as well as mountaineers and the seductive kiss of a mermaid.

Follow the walks around Brixham to discover the many images and artistic styles that delight, brighten, intrigue and confound.
